SignatureProfiler 1.4.8 Released

A new bug fix release already. This addresses a problem with the aliases from .Mac not being recognized. I'm very surprised that this hadn't been noticed before. In any case, now you should see all of the aliases from .Mac listed for the account. It will use any name associated with the alias by default, though at this point it will not update .Mac if you change the display name inside the SignatureProfiler preferences.

SignatureProfiler 1.4.7 Released

Happy New Year! Well once again I have a small update to fix an issue with the scripting feature. It was smashing the content returned from a script into an unreadable mess ignoring any formatting. This is due to the fact that the text is being inserted as HTML because of the way Mail works. So plain text would lose all new lines and tabs, etc. This update fixes that to force it to save the formatting.

SignatureProfiler 1.4.5 Released

This is a small maintenance release to fix a small bug found when trying to include data from iTunes, but the song or album or artist is empty. An exception was being thrown and not handled. This would usually cause Mail to freeze up and require a Force Quit. Not good. I'm surprised that this hasn't been seen before. Are you people really using this?

Just kidding, of course. It's probably slightly unusual for someone who likes to include their iTunes information to actually have a nice tidy library.

SignatureProfiler 1.4.4 Released - Leopard Support.

Finally!

Well this should have been out a long time ago, but I just haven't had the time necessary to dedicate to it. So I have done it little by little and finally gotten this done. I had even tried to put out a new version with a different architecture for future simplicity, but that was just delaying it longer. So, I finally just went back and put Leopard compatibility in an older version of the code (yeah for svn!).

I'm not using it everyday on Leopard, since my main machine is not yet ready to go to Leopard, so if you find any issues please let me know and I'll look at them as quickly as I can.

Thanks to those writing in to say that they hoped there will be a Leopard version. It's good to know that people use it.

Support for Leopard added.

Support for Panther removed.

Changed Installer mechanism to fix several issues and simplify.

Leopard Release... Not yet

Hello there. Well, I am sorry to say that it is taking me longer than I had hoped to get this release out that will support Leopard. I think it could actually still be 2 more weeks.

The reason actually does have much to do with Leopard either. I was in the middle of some fairly substantial internal changes to the plugin. Of course, once I made the changes necessary for Leopard to function, some other fairly nasty bugs show up in both Tiger and Leopard, meaning that my newer version isn't stable enough for release, even though the Leopard issues have been addressed.

I will try this weekend to update the last released version of the code for Leopard and release that if I can do it by Monday evening. That will be a temporary version of SignatureProfiler, but at least people will be able to use it.

Thanks for your patience!

Leopard and SignatureProfiler…

Well, as I write this Leopard is about to be released in Europe and has already hit people's machines in places like Australia and Japan. The obvious question is will the SignatureProfiler plugin work properly with Leopard Mail.app. The quick answer is "no", unfortunately. I had tested it in a previous version of Leopard and it seemed to work fine, but now it doesn't. I will take the next week and try to resolve the issue and release a new version.

Please stay tuned…

Calling Scripts from Signatures

Many users will find this new feature of SignatureProfiler very exciting. It allows you to interject any data that you can get in text form from any command line into a signature. You could easily incorporate iChat status, uptime count, random quote from a database, etc into you signatures. In addition any standard SignatureProfiler placeholders will be replaced after the script contents are inserted into the signature, so in truth a single signature calling a script can be as dynamic as you are inside that script.

For more details, read on...

SignatureProfiler 1.4.2 Released

This release to adds a feature that has been much requested, so I am hoping that you find it useful. As usual there is no change to the Panther version and there probably won't ever be. These are the changes made:

Fixed a problem with the Configure Mail Settings and Uninstall SignatureProfiler scripts.

Added the ability to call scripts from within a signature, allowing you to incorporate any text output from a script into the signature. This is the most requested feature that I have had, so it need to be implemented.

Added a random quotation feature in directly, so that users who are not very familiar with scripting can also take advantage of this capability.</il>

Using the New Random Quote Feature

With the release of version 1.4.2, you now have the ability to create a simple text file that can be used as a source of random quotations to be incorporated into your signatures. Once you have created this file you can simply insert a simple {random.quote} placeholder into your signature to have it pick one for you. In addition, you can associate an author and a citation/source to that quote to be inserted separately. Read on for more details and some examples.

Site Disruption

Well, I don't have any idea if anyone really noticed, but this site was completely inaccessible for almost week. I finally got it back up a couple of days ago. I had to completely rebuild everything, but it looks like all is well. Sorry if there was any inconvenience for anyone.

I am currently working on a minor update to SignatureProfiler that adds the most requested feature of adding the ability to incorporate scripts into the signatures. This will allow people to integrate a list of random quotes or whatever else into the signature. Should be at most a week before I release this.

Using the iTunes Integration with SignatureProfiler

Although the iTunes integration into signatures is a rather frivolous need, it's one of the original things that I had wanted to do. After all, we Mac users like to share stuff right? There used to be an even cooler shareware tool that would create an image and upload the image to a server even few minutes of what was playing in iTunes. Then you could link to that image in an email or web site or whatever. I liked that very much and thought it was cool, but they could no longer support the server so the service disappeared. That program (whose name I unfortunately can't remember) was better because it always showed the current status. I had to settle for showing what is playing when the message is sent.

Anyway, below the fold are some examples of how these signatures can be used and a couple of gotchas to look out for and avoid.
